Practice Route

E-mail Print PDF

If you want to see the route I chose to see if I could actually walk the full distance then here it is.

This route was around 18 miles and took me six and three quarter hours including a brief stop for a sandwich when I crossed the A38 and a slightly longer stop 4 miles from home at the Navigation Inn (run by my cousins wife) where I had a very welcome pint of London Pride.

The hills on the second half of the walk took its toll, I was pretty sore and stiff afterwards.

Ice cold in..... Dunkerque.

Call me sad but... The prospect of our walk is imprinted on my mind and I have to say, despite a reasonable fitness I find the prospect of our walk quite daunting.

What is driving me on?

An image.... an image that people of a certain age will remember from the 1958 film "Ice Cold in Alex" Starring John Mills, Anthony Quayle, Sylvia Sims and Harry Andrews.

I see the end of our walk following along the lines of a black and white film image of a bar, some people and ice cold beer.

Sad but true, I can't wait for the evening of 28th May 2010 after our walk.

3rd Generation offspring?

If you have looked at our Just Giving page (at justgiving.com/40000steps) you will see one or two people have generously donated to our chosen Charity (as of the relatively early date of 6th September). Amongst them is my sister and Matt's mum and she states that "...we'll be there to cheer you on at the end with an ice cold beverage..."

I have to say that this is a welcome addition to our plan but I have an inkling that a certain 'little man' will be joining us for the last couple of... yards/metres/kilometers/miles.

Little man?
Charlie is Matt's son, He's seven years old and in all honesty he is probably a little too young to walk the full distance we plan to do. However, wouldn't it be great if he joined us for the last couple of Kilometers along the beach. A symbolism I hope isn't lost on our visitors.

1940: John George Frizzell Escaped from Dunkerque.
2010: Andy Frizzell son and 1st Generation offspring.
2010: Matt Charnick Grandson and 2nd Generation offspring.
2010: Charlie Charnick Great Grandson and 3rd Generation offspring.

Three generations who would not be here but for the sacrifice of so many.

There is another 'little Charnick' but as he is currently less than a year old he would have to be carried. I think I will be struggling to get myself to the finish, let alone a baby!
